What support and training will we/I receive from SAFEHOUSES

Included in your weekly fee is an allowance to enable each fostering household to have 2 weeks paid holiday a year. You are expected to arrange this well in advance, and in discussion with the agency and the LA who placed your child/children. Holidays must not be taken in term time - there are government guidelines about this.

Safehouses recognizes that there are times when foster carers may need additional respite. On such occasions Safehouses will do all it can to assist.

Safehouses arranges social events, such as barbeques parties and days out to make sure carers and staff can meet up informally.

Support groups meet after training session to share thoughts and ideas, and carers are encouraged to make contact informally for additional mutual support. Supervising social workers visit carers fortnightly, and there is a duty social worker available 24hours a day, 365 days a year.

Upon approval each foster home is enrolled in the membership of Fostering Network - an advice an advocacy service for foster carers.

Training

SAFEHOUSES believes ongoing training helps carers widen their knowledge, which in turn benefits the children/young people they care for.

Increasingly SAFEHOUSES is finding Local Authorities are favouring placements with carers who are committed to ongoing professional development.

All carers must attend a specific training course arranged by Safehouses prior to approval.

Thereafter you are expected to attend a minimum of 6 sessions a year. Carers are encouraged to help identify courses which are of interest.

On approval you will be provided with a detailed Handbook, containing many aspects of fostering.

Safehouses works with education advisory services (where agreed by the Local Authority) to assist the carer in supporting the child/young person educationally.
